Individuals who have already possess an EMT certification through the State of North Carolina may still apply for this position. They will be required to participate in the entire academy and must take the final class exam but will not have to recertify with the state.
ABOUT THE POSITION & PROGRAM: The EMT-Basic Recruit position is geared towards individuals with a long-term goal of continued employment as an EMT-Basic. Applicants must be willing to commit to at least two (2) years of continued employment with Pender EMS & Fire, Inc. after successful completion of the academy.
No experience in emergency medicine is required however candidates must demonstrate a strong work ethic, motivation, and responsibility.
Selected candidates will attend an in-house training academy to develop skills and demonstrate proper procedures to become proficient in providing emergency medical treatment to sick or injured persons. Under close supervision in a training capacity, the EMT-Basic Recruit will learn about and utilize a variety of necessary skills in order to begin a career in Emergency Medical Services.
Candidates will graduate with a North Carolina EMT certification. Upon successful completion of the academy, participants in good standing may continue their careers with us as an EMT-Basic and their compensation rate will be increased to reflect the EMT-Basic rate of pay.
ACADEMY STRUCTURE: The academy is approximately seven (7) weeks. Our highly specialized training consists of comprehensive classroom and practical instruction on emergency medical care and operations.
The classroom portion of the academy will be held Monday-Friday at our training center located at 1015 Island Creek Rd., Rocky Point, NC 28457.
Following the classroom portion, recruits will be required to partake in one (1) clinical in the
Emergency Department and three (3) clinicals on an ambulance.
Upon successful completion of the academy, recruits will take the final class exam and State
test. Upon successfully passing these tests and completing the academy, recruits may begin
their career with us as an EMT-Basic.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• At least 18 years of age
• Eligible for employment in the United States
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Possession of a valid Driver's License
• Annual Completion of physical agility test (conducted by Pender EMS & Fire, Inc.)
REQUIRED SCREENINGS/TESTS: Applicants will be required to successfully complete the
following testing and screenings:
• Criminal Background Check
• Pre-Employment Drug Screen
• Physical Agility Test
• Panel Interview
• CASAS Reading Placement Test score of 249 or higher within the last year or successful
completion a college level English class within the last ten (10) years
COURSE REQUIREMENT: The course requirement for the EMT class portion of the Academy is a
CASAS Reading Placement Test score of 249 or higher within the last year or successful
completion a college level English class within the last ten (10) years. To be deemed eligible for
the Academy, applicants must submit documentation of their passing placement test score or
an official college transcript to Human Resources. Placement test scores can be obtained from
the CFCC’s Admissions Office. To schedule a placement test exam, please visit CFCC’s testing

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must provide proof of the following
immunizations:
• Current flu vaccine (required October – March)
• 2 Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccinations or positive antibody titer
• History of Chicken Pox (documentation required) or 2 Varicella immunizations
• TB skin test (PPD within the past year) or chest x-ray
• Tetanus vaccination within the last 10 years
• 3 Hepatitis B vaccinations or a signed declination statement
