ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under direction of the Fire Battalion Chief or higher-ranking officer or acting of his/her own volition, the Fire Captain performs responsible management, technical and administrative work in commanding, supervising, coordinating, and performing fire emergency operations, training of firefighters, fire prevention, general facility/equipment maintenance, public education and other related programs and services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
​

High School Diploma or GED equivalent
-
Possession of a valid class B driver's License
-
Possession of a valid, unrestricted North Carolina EMT (or higher) credential
-
Possession of a valid American Heart Association (AHA) cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Certification
-
Five (5) years of firefighting experience, with two (2) years of experience in a progressively responsible supervisory role or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform in the position

Certified NC Firefighter Level 2

Certified NC Emergency Vehicle Driver (EVD)
-
Certified NC Technical Rescuer-General
-
Certified NC Technical Rescuer-Vehicle Rescue
-
Certified NC Driver Operator Pumps
-
Certified NC Driver Operator Aerials
-
Certified NC Fire Officer Level 1

Certified NC Fire Instructor Level 1

All non-NC Certifications must have NCOSFM reciprocity

Completion of NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, & 800

Successful Completion of Candidate Ability Performance Test (CPAT)

Initial & Annual Completion of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Physical

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES:
​
-
Ability to perform all essential functions of a Fire Engineer as defined in department job description.
-
Ability to perform all essential functions of a Firefighter/EMT as defined in department job description.
-
Participate in fire prevention, pre-planning, inspections, and fire equipment testing activities.
-
Ability to operate in extremely dangerous scenarios and life and death environments that potentially expose the individual to great bodily harm or death.
-
Oversees and participates in the management of fire suppression, prevention, emergency medical services, training and disaster preparedness program services and activities.
-
Performs competently in highly stressful situations.
-
Enforces company policies.
-
Participates in performance evaluations and makes recommendations regarding personnel actions.
-
May be asked to work extended hours and days to meet all operational needs.
-
Plans, organizes, and coordinates the training of their staff of the station they are assigned to.
-
Prepares written reports of fire and rescue incidents.
-
Represents the department at various events.
-
Maintains familiarity with specialized equipment.
-
Responsible for understanding the geography and street layout of the service districts and surrounding area.

Performs daily inspections of assigned vehicles, radios, and equipment as required to maintain operational readiness.
-
Ensures that vehicle is in proper mechanical condition by checking items required by service management.
-
Refuels vehicle and reports any unsafe operating conditions of vehicles, radios, and equipment.

Attend mandatory training as required by NCOEMS and Pender EMS & Fire, inc.
-
Perform daily station duties; ensure stations are kept clean and orderly.

Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Maintains an appropriate level of personal fitness to pass the department’s annual JPAT requirements.
-
Exposes him/herself regularly in heat, smoke, hazardous gases and innumerable other hazardous conditions and environments.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Very Heavy Work: Exerting up to 200 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust his or her focus, allowing a broad field of vision.

Visual and fine/gross motor skills enabling the safe operation of a vehicle during normal, as well as during hazardous weather situations.
