ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The focus of the Fire Training Captain is to provide training, and opportunities for training, in all aspects of the fire service to members and employees of Pender EMS & Fire. Training should consist of topics including, but not limited to; strategies and tactics of structural firefighting, fire officer development, departmental driver operator training, hazard materials training, site specific blood borne pathogens training and other topics as needed to satisfy requirements of Pender EMS & Fire, Inc.
Whether under direction of the Training Division and/or Fire Division Chief or acting of his/her own volition, the Fire Training Captain performs responsible management, technical and administrative work in commanding and coordinating fire emergency operations, training of firefighters, fire prevention, general facility/equipment maintenance, public education and other related programs and services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:

Ability to utilize audio/visual media to effectively deliver training presentations;

Knowledge of adult learning styles and ability to effectively teach to various learning styles;

“Hands-on” training and teaching techniques;
-
Ability to maintain physical condition to perform essential duties as specified by Pender EMS & Fire;
-
Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include performing life threatening firefighting activities in an emergency situation; running, walking, crouching or crawling during emergency operations; moving equipment and injured/deceased persons; climbing stairs/ladders; performing life-saving and rescue procedures; walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time; operating assigned equipment and vehicles;

Ability to effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to fire encompassed surroundings, dangerous persons, dangerous animals; hazards of emergency driving; hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic; and natural and man-made disasters;

Ability to operate assigned equipment;

Ability to make sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions;
Education and Experience:
Required:
• Possession of a high school diploma or GED and five years of firefighting experience, with two years of that experience in a progressively responsible supervisory role or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform in the position;
• Possession of a valid NC Class B driver’s license;
• Certified NC Fire Instructor Level 2
• NC OSFM Qualification to instruct Firefighter I & II and DO: Pumps or ability to obtain within one year of employment;
• Certified NC Firefighter Level 2;
• Possession of a NC EMT credential;
• Certified NC Emergency Vehicle Driver;
• Certified NC Technical Rescuer General;
• Certified NC Technical Rescuer VMR;
• Certified NC Driver Operator Pumps;
• Certified NC Driver Operator Aerials;
• Certified NC Fire Officer Level 1 & 2, or ability to obtain within two years of employment;
• NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, 800, with the ability to obtain NIMS 300 and 400 within two years of employment
