ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the general supervision of the Fire Battalion Chief, higher-ranking officer, or acting of his/her own volition, the Rescue Technician performs skilled and technical work in operating an approved rescue vehicle and providing appropriate rescue skills and basic emergency medical care to patients while on scene of incidents. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and removing persons from entrapment or entanglement of various situations. The Rescue Technician is also responsible for ensuring their assigned apparatus and equipment is maintained in appropriate readiness to respond to a variety of life saving emergency calls.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Must operate both as a member of a team and independently at incidents of uncertain duration in urban, rural, water and wilderness environments. 

  • Drive Emergency apparatus to and from emergency incidents safely.

  • Engages in extrication of victims from vehicles or confined spaces, structural collapse, and emergency medical procedures while wearing personal protective equipment weighing approximately fifty (70) pounds.

  • Is responsible for performing in accordance with established rescue techniques and emergency medical procedures but must exercise considerable independent judgment in evaluating and extricating victims. 

  • Maintains familiarity with specialized equipment.

  • Responsible for understanding the geography and street layout of the service districts and surrounding area.

  • Performs daily inspections of assigned vehicles, radios, and equipment as required to maintain operational readiness.

  • Ensures that vehicle is in proper mechanical condition by checking items required by service management.

  • Refuels vehicle and reports any unsafe operating conditions of vehicles, radios, and equipment.

  • Attend mandatory training as required by NCOEMS and Pender EMS & Fire, inc.

  • Perform daily station duties; ensure stations are kept clean and orderly.

  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Maintains an appropriate level of personal fitness to pass the department’s annual JPAT requirements.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

  • Very Heavy Work: Exerting up to 200 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust his or her focus, allowing a broad field of vision.

  • Visual and fine/gross motor skills enabling the safe operation of a vehicle during normal, as well as during hazardous weather situations.

  • May spend extensive time outside exposed to the elements, such as wet, icy or muddy areas. 

  • Is exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to infectious disease. 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Eligible for Employment in the United States

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Valid Class B Driver's License

  • Successful completion of background screening and driving record check

  • Must successfully pass urine drug screening

  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted EMT-Basic credential from the North Carolina Medical Examiners Board

  • Possession of a valid American Heart Association (AHA) cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Certification

  • Completion of NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, 800

  • Certified NC Firefighter Level 2

  • Certified NC Technical Rescuer

  • Certified NC Technical Rescuer - Vehicle Rescue

  • Certified NC Emergency Vehicle Driver (EVD) 

  • All non-NC certifications must have NCOSFM reciprocity 

  • Successful Completion of Candidate Ability Performance Test (CPAT)

  • Annual Completion of Job Performance Ability Test (JPAT)

  • Initial & Annual completion of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Physical

  • Considerable knowledge of rescue technician procedures and techniques

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2 Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccinations or positive antibody titer

  • History of Chicken Pox (documentation required) or 2 Varicella immunizations.

  • TB skin test (PPD within the past year) or chest x-ray

  • Tetanus vaccination within the last 10 years

  • 3 Hepatitis B vaccinations or a signed declination statement
