CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time

SCHEDULE: 12 Hour Pitman Schedule

STARTING SALARY (FULL-TIME): $21.05/Hr (Regular) & $31.58/Hr (Incentive Rate)

POSITION SUMMARY: The AEMT responds to emergency and nonemergency medical calls and provides limited advanced-level life support to patients in the pre-hospital setting. Work involves operating a mobile medical unit as an attendant or driver, performing necessary rescue work in accordance with established protocols for limited advanced life support; assessing scene for safety; evaluating conditions of patients, gathering pertinent information, including patient’s medications, allergies, medical history, etc., and determining proper treatment; administering necessary emergency medical care, monitoring vital signs and transporting sick or sick persons to the closest appropriate medical facility. The AEMT must exercise considerable independent judgment in evaluating patients and ensuring that quality emergency patient care standards are in place. Work is subject to the usual hazards involved with emergency medical services including the risk of exposure to infectious diseases. The AEMT also performs all other duties as assigned.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides emergency medical care to injured, sick, or incapacitated patients.

  • Drives approved mobile medical care unit to closest appropriate facility in a safe manner.

  • Observes, records, and reports to the physician the patient’s condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment. Performs first-aid and emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures such as airway management, and heart monitoring during ambulance ride.

  • Maintains familiarity with specialized equipment.

  • Operates equipment such as electrocardiograms (EKGs), external defibrillators, or bag valve mask resuscitators in advanced life support environments. Administers drugs either orally or by injection or performs intravenous procedures under a physician’s direction.

  • Immobilizes patient(s) for placement on stretcher and ambulance transport using a backboard or other spinal immobilization device.

  • Performs daily inspections of assigned vehicles, radios, linens, medical equipment, and supplies; restocks supplies as required to maintain operational readiness.

  • Determines that vehicle is in proper mechanical condition by checking items required by service management. Refuels vehicle and reports any unsafe operating conditions of vehicles and radios.

  • In accordance with local, state, or federal regulations, decontaminates the interior of the ambulance after every transport.

  • Attends mandatory continuing education programs as required by Pender EMS & Fire, Inc., medical control, and NCOEMS.

  • The AEMT also performs all other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies and stressful situations and use critical thinking to make high-consequence decisions rapidly. 

  • Ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and firm manner. 

  • Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in written documentation  

  • Ability to deal with death and dying patients. 

  • Ability to work with others with little supervision for long periods of time. 

  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality as required by law. 

  • Must possess knowledge of and skill in administering emergency medical procedures and techniques. 

  • Ability to perform duties in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, medical protocols, and standing orders. 

  • Must have skills and familiarity with emergency and patient transport vehicle characteristics to safely operate the vehicle under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions to provide emergency and patient transportation. 

  • Ability to read highway maps and GPS devices. 

  • Ability to become familiar with county geography and locations of roads and streets. 

  • Requires the ability to prepare and/or read a variety of correspondence, reports, logs, etc. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy lifting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, with or without assistance. Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment. Employees must successfully complete a Job Physical Ability Test (JPAT) on an annual basis.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION:

  • At least 18 years of age

  • Eligible for employment in the United States

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Possession of a valid Driver’s license.

  • Successful completion of background screening and driving record check

  • Must successfully pass urine drug screening.

  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted AEMT credential from the North Carolina Medical Examiners Board

  • Possession of a valid American Heart Association (AHA) cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Certification

  • Successful Completion of Candidate Ability Performance Test (CPAT)

  • NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 (Will be done in orientation for those that do not hold these prior to orientation)

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must provide proof of the following immunizations:

  • 2 Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccinations or positive antibody titer 

  • History of Chicken Pox (documentation required) or 2 Varicella immunizations. 

  • TB skin test (PPD within the past year) or chest x-ray  

  • Tetanus vaccination within the last 10 years  

  • 3 Hepatitis B vaccinations or a signed declination statement 

 

REQUIRED FOLLOWING ONE (1) YEAR OF EMPLOYMENT: 

  • Emergency Vehicle Driving (EVD) Course 

  • Hazardous Materials Awareness Level I 

  • Annual Completion of Job Performance Ability Test (JPAT)
